Ji Chang Wook Talks About How He Became An Actor, His Character In “Backstreet Rookie,” And More
Jun 4, 2020
On June 3, Ji Chang Wook sat down for an interview on SBS’s entertainment news program “E-news Exclusive.”
The actor is currently gearing up for the premiere of “Backstreet Rookie,” the upcoming drama from SBS about the unpredictable love story between convenience store owner Choi Dae Hyun (Ji Chang Wook) and part-time employee Jung Saet Byul (Kim Yoo Jung).
In the interview, Ji Chang Wook said, “I’m playing the owner of the convenience store. He has a comedic side, and he’s a bit of a klutz. He can be a little petty and indecisive.” The interviewer remarked that this was different from the actor’s public image and Ji Chang Wook replied, “There’s a small part of me that’s like that as well.”
The actor continued, “I first thought of being an actor when I was in high school. It wasn’t like there was a special opportunity. I just thought that the job ‘actor’ was cool and I wanted to do it. In my final year of high school, I had a huge fight with my parents because they opposed my decision to apply to the acting department [in university]. They started to acknowledge me when I started making money.”
The interviewer pointed out that Ji Chang Wook had singing as well as acting chops, starring in musicals and recording OSTs for his dramas. The interviewer, a singer known as Copychu, offered to write a song for him as the OST for “Backstreet Rookie.” Ji Chang Wook then took him by surprise by revealing that he knows one of Copychu’s songs and singing it for him.
“Backstreet Rookie” is slated to premiere on June 12.
